Living the 'New Normal'

It is challenging but exciting times in Kaikoura as the dust settles from last November’s earthquake.  Many of our sports and recreation facilities were damaged, but we are well underway with repairs and planning some exciting new facilities that will see our community well into the future.  We have so many amazing volunteers, coaches and administrators who are ‘getting on with it’ and making sport happen.

Community Facility Planning

The clear biggest priorities from our recent Ratepayer’s Survey were a new pool/aquatic centre, and combined sports facility.  Currently we are working with the Kaikoura Recovery Team to facilitate the planning process for these major projects.

Stage 1 is getting a clear picture of what the needs are and a cohesive voice from our sports community that can be the basis for a Feasibility Study.  Alongside a Feasibility Study will be the building of a Business Case to ensure the sustainability of any facility into the future.

We welcome questions and input – please contact Community Sports Advisor Kim Boyce-Campbell to see how you can be involved.

Upcoming events in Kaikoura:

Throughout the year many events, activities, projects and programmes are lead, supported or delivered in and around Kaikoura by Sport Tasman. The major events over the next few months lead by Sport Tasman are:

Kids Active Holiday Programme:

A lot of work has been done in the last 3 years to create a Kaikoura Kids Active Holiday Programme for the town to be proud of and get the kids active and learning during the holidays. Spring programme [available soon]. Enrolment Form. We have been recognised for our efforts and have recently earned OSCAR accreditation (Out of School Care and Recreation).  This means a higher quality programme with great activities and high levels of safety.  Working subsidies are available to cover some or all of the user fees if you’re a working parent that meets the criteria.  It’s best to apply early to get your subsidy well before the holidays start.  Call Heartlands to find out more information on subsidies on 03 909 9292.

Kaikoura’s very own Sports Trailer is ready for action!
Some of you may have seen this fun filled trailer about town or been lucky enough to use it already.  It's jam packed with a myriad of sporting toys, from pre-school toys, to balls, bats, hockey kits, fitness gear and more.  Over the holidays it can be hired privately for birthday parties/special occasions, or community events.  Get in touch with Kim to find out more.

Kaikoura Lions Pool:

The Pool is now CLOSED indefinitely due to earthquake damage.  The Pools in Schools temporary pool has been generously funded by NZ Community Trust and hs been installed on the Kaikoura Primary School netball courts.  Public Sessions: Friday after school, Saturdays and Sundays 12-4pm.  Groups may book the pool for their own session – contact Toni Batey 027 438 2678.  Pool open until Easter.

Thank a Sport Maker:

The community is full of volunteers of every capacity – from coaches to uniform washers and orange cutters.  These are the people that need recognition, they are the people that keep our sport community going.  Please go on and place your vote for them – You are able to nominate more than one person.

A database of all the sports clubs and recreational activities going on in Kaikoura has been created.  This information can be found on the Sport Tasman website ‘Find a Sport' or the Kaikoura District council website as well as the 2017 Community Calendar.

Future challenges will be to organise more community events for all ages of the community to have FUN!

Don’t forget to ‘Like’ the Sport Tasman Kaikoura Facebook page to keep up to date with all the latest community activities. Stay in the loop and don’t miss out!
